Poudre Lake is a special kind of lake called an alpine lake. It is found high up in the mountains. This lake is also the main starting point for the Poudre River. You can find Poudre Lake in Larimer County, Colorado. It sits just a short distance east of the Continental Divide.
Where is Poudre Lake?
Poudre Lake is located in the beautiful state of Colorado. It's in a county called Larimer County. The lake is very close to the Continental Divide. This is a line that runs through North America. It separates which way rivers flow. Rivers on one side flow to the Atlantic Ocean. Rivers on the other side flow to the Pacific Ocean.
Traveling Near the Lake
A road called U.S. Route 34 goes right past Poudre Lake. This road also crosses the Continental Divide at a place called Milner Pass. Milner Pass is located at the southwest end of the lake. It's a scenic drive with amazing mountain views.
Why Fish Can't Live in Poudre Lake
Poudre Lake is sometimes called a "dead lake." This doesn't mean it's actually dead. It means that fish cannot survive there. The reason is simple: the lake freezes completely during the cold winter months. When the water turns to solid ice, there isn't enough oxygen for fish to breathe. This makes it impossible for them to live in the lake year-round.
