Powell Junction is a specific geographic location in the northeastern part of Idaho County, Idaho, in the United States. It's important to know that Powell Junction is not a town or a community where people live. Instead, it's a name given to certain spots where trails or roads meet.

What is Powell Junction?

Powell Junction is a place name, not a populated area. This means no one lives there. It's simply a way to mark a spot on a map. Over time, the name "Powell Junction" has been used for three different places. All of these spots are located north and slightly west of the Powell Ranger Station.

The First Powell Junction

The very first place called Powell Junction was on the historic Lolo Trail. This trail is a high path along a ridge, north of the ranger station. From this first junction, a separate trail led down a steep slope known as Parachute Hill. This path went to the Powell Ranger Station. The ranger station itself is found on the north bank of the Lochsa River, just south of U.S. Route 12.

The Second Powell Junction

The name "Powell Junction" was used again in 1935. This time, it referred to a new meeting point. This new junction was created when the Lolo Motorway was built and connected with the road leading to the Rocky Point Lookout.

Powell Junction Today

In more recent times, the name Powell Junction describes a different spot. It is now used for the place where the Lolo Motorway meets U.S. Route 12. This shows how the meaning of a geographic name can change over the years.
