History
Powhattan was founded around 1877. It was first known as Locknane and served as a station where stagecoaches would stop. Stagecoaches were like old-time buses that carried people and mail across the country. The city later got its name from Chief Powhatan, a Native American leader from Virginia. Powhattan became an official city in 1887.
