History
Prado del Rey opened its doors on 18 July 1964. It was built to replace TVE's first offices in Madrid. Francisco Franco, who was the leader of Spain at the time, and Manuel Fraga, the government's Minister of Information, officially opened the building.
When it first opened, Prado del Rey had three TV studios ready to use, and six more were being built. Studio 1 was very large, about 1,200 square meters. This made it the biggest TV studio in Europe back then! Soon, many shows and TV series started being made there. However, the main news program, Telediario, and its news teams did not move in until 1967. In 1971, the main offices for Radio Nacional de España (RNE) also moved to a nearby building called Casa de la Radio.
On 13 November 1983, the last Telediario news report was broadcast from Prado del Rey. This was because TVE's news services, which were in the basement of the Casa de la Radio, moved to a new place. They moved to the Torrespaña complex in Madrid, which is at the base of a tall communications tower. Today, the main control room for TVE, the central newsroom, the 24 Horas news channel, Telediario, and Informe Semanal are all located at Torrespaña. However, in 2019, a plan was approved to move them back to Prado del Rey, starting in late 2021.
