Pray is a small community in Park County, Montana, United States. It's located in a beautiful area called the Paradise Valley. Pray is known as a census-designated place and an unincorporated community. This means it's a recognized area where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government like a town or city would.
The community was started in 1907 by Valentine Eggar, who was a businessman. He named it after Charles Nelson Pray, who was a Congressman. A Congressman is a person elected to represent their area in the United States Congress, where laws are made for the country.
Location and Scenery
Pray is located right next to the Yellowstone River. You can find it on Highway 540, also known as East River Road. It's about 22 miles from a town called Livingston. It's also only about 30 miles away from the famous Yellowstone National Park.
The area around Pray is very scenic. You can see amazing views of the Absaroka Mountain Range. These mountains are part of the Gallatin National Forest, which is a large protected area of forests and mountains.
A Town for Sale
In 2012, something interesting happened in Pray. The five acres that make up the main part of the town were put up for sale. The owner, Barbara Walker, who is a photographer, offered it for $1.4 million.
Pray has been privately owned since it was first founded. This means that instead of being owned by the government, it has been owned by private individuals or families. Ms. Walker's family started running the town in 1953. She became the "mayor" or owner in 2007.
Ms. Walker said that owning Pray wasn't a difficult job. She explained that the town was "pretty low-maintenance." Her main tasks were to collect rent from the people living there once a month and to take care of the lawn and water the plants.
