Preacher Moss's Early Life
Preacher Moss was born in Washington, D.C. His parents were Clifford and Mary Moss. He started doing comedy when he was only seven years old. That's when he got the nickname "Preacher." He earned it by copying the pastor at his family's church.
He grew up Christian in a Maryland suburb. He went to a local military school for his education. By age 17, Moss was doing sketch comedy. In his early 20s, he started performing at comedy clubs.
In 1988, when he was 20, he became a Muslim. He studied journalism at Marquette University. After graduating, he taught children with special needs in Milwaukee. He also kept performing stand-up comedy.
Becoming a Writer
In 1994, Moss opened a show for comedian Darrell Hammond. Hammond was impressed and hired him as a writer. To get even better at comedy, Moss moved to Los Angeles.
There, he continued teaching special education classes. He also worked as a writer for other comedians. These included famous names like Damon Wayans and George Lopez.
Stand-Up Comedy Journey
Moss soon began performing his own comedy shows. He created a show called End of Racism. Starting in 2000, he toured many colleges and high schools. He performed, taught, and talked about important topics. These included poverty, racism, and civil rights.
He performed "End of Racism" for four years. Then, he got an idea for a new kind of comedy show. This show would address a different type of unfairness. It was about unfair feelings against Muslims after the events of 9/11.
In May 2004, Moss teamed up with other Muslim comedians. These were Azhar Usman and Azeem Muhammad. (Later, Mohammed Amer joined in 2006). They started a comedy tour called Allah Made Me Funny. This tour visited 30 U.S. cities in its first year. They also performed in Canada, Europe, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East.
