Predrag Matvejević (born October 7, 1932 – died February 2, 2017) was a famous writer and scholar. He was from Bosnia and Croatia. He taught about literature at universities in Zagreb, Paris, and Rome.

He is most known for his book Mediterranean: A Cultural Landscape. This non-fiction book came out in 1987. It is a very important work about the cultural history of the Mediterranean Sea area. The book has been translated into more than 20 languages.

About Predrag Matvejević

Predrag Matvejević was born in Mostar in 1932. At that time, Mostar was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Today, it is in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His family had a mixed background. His father was Russian and his mother was a Croatian from Herzegovina.

Early Life and Education

During World War II in Yugoslavia, Predrag worked briefly as a messenger. He helped the Partisans. After the war, he finished school at the Mostar Gymnasium.

He then studied French language and literature. He started at the University of Sarajevo. Later, he continued his studies at the University of Zagreb. He earned his degree there. He went on to study more in France. In 1967, he received his doctorate from the Sorbonne. His special study was about socially engaged poetry.

Teaching Career and Travels

After his studies, Predrag Matvejević returned to Yugoslavia. He became a university professor in Zagreb. He taught French literature at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. He worked there until 1991.

When the Croatian War of Independence began, he moved abroad. He taught Slavic literature at the University of Paris III: Sorbonne Nouvelle. This was from 1991 to 1994. In 1994, he moved to the Sapienza University of Rome. There, he taught Croatian and Serbian literature and languages. He retired in 2007 when he was 75 years old.

He became an Italian citizen. He was also an honorary vice-president of PEN International. This is a worldwide group of writers. He received special awards from France, Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy.

Recognitions and Awards

Predrag Matvejević received many honors for his writings. He wrote a lot about the history of literature. He also wrote about the social history of Yugoslavia and the Mediterranean. He was given honorary doctorates from several universities. These included the University of Perpignan, the University of Genoa, the University of Trieste, and the University of Mostar.
