The Première Nation des Innus de Nutashkuan is a group of Innu people. They are a First Nation band government in Quebec, Canada. The band lives on a special area of land called Nutashkuan. This land is an Indian reserve located in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec. As of 2021, there are 1,217 registered members in this First Nation. They are part of a larger group called the Regroupement Mamit Innuat tribal council.
About the Nutashkuan Innu First Nation
The people of the Nutashkuan First Nation are known as Innu. They are also sometimes called Montagnais. In July 2021, the band had 1,217 registered members. Most of these members, 1,100, lived on their reserve. A smaller number, 117, lived in other places.
The Canadian government counts how many people live on reserves. In 2016, Statistics Canada found 835 people living on the Nutashkuan reserve. This number was very close to the 841 people counted in 2011.
Where is Nutashkuan Located?
The Nutashkuan First Nation has one main reserve called Nutashkuan. It is located in the Côte-Nord region of Quebec. The reserve is very close to the town of Natashquan.
The reserve sits right at the mouth of the Natashquan River. This river flows into the northern part of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The land area of the reserve is about 1.189 square kilometers.
Nutashkuan is quite far from bigger cities. It is about 375 kilometers east of Sept-Îles. It is also about 1,000 kilometers east of Quebec City. You can reach it by following Quebec Route 138. The community also has its own airport, called Natashquan Airport.
