Who Leads UEFA?
Since UEFA was created in 1954, several important people have served as its president. Each president has helped shape how football is played and managed across Europe.
The First Leaders
The very first president of UEFA was Ebbe Schwartz from Denmark. He started his role on June 22, 1954, and led the organization until April 17, 1962. He helped set up the rules and structure for European football.
After Ebbe Schwartz, Gustav Wiederkehr from Switzerland became president on April 17, 1962. He was in charge for about ten years until he sadly passed away on July 7, 1972.
For a short time after Gustav Wiederkehr, Sándor Barcs from Hungary stepped in as an acting president. He served from July 7, 1972, until March 15, 1973.
Leaders Through the Years
Artemio Franchi from Italy took over as president on March 15, 1973. He was a very important leader for UEFA, serving for over ten years until his death on August 12, 1983.
Next was Jacques Georges from France, who became president on August 12, 1983. He led UEFA until April 19, 1990.
Then came Lennart Johansson from Sweden, who started his presidency on April 19, 1990. He was one of the longest-serving presidents, leading UEFA for nearly 17 years until January 26, 2007.
Michel Platini from France, a famous former football player, became president on January 26, 2007. He served until October 8, 2015.
After Michel Platini, Ángel María Villar from Spain served as an acting president from October 9, 2015, until September 14, 2016.
UEFA's Current President
The current president of UEFA is Aleksander Čeferin from Slovenia. He took office on September 14, 2016, and continues to lead the organization today. He works to make sure European football is fair, exciting, and well-managed for everyone.
