The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the country's leader. This important role is also known as the Raʾīs in Arabic. The President is the head of state, meaning they are the main representative of the UAE to the world.
The President and the Vice Presidents are chosen every five years. This election is done by the Federal Supreme Council, which is a group of rulers from each of the seven emirates. The President then officially appoints the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.
In reality, the ruler of Abu Dhabi usually becomes the President. The ruler of Dubai usually becomes the Prime Minister. The President is also the top commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first President. He helped bring the seven emirates together to form one country. He was President from 1971 until he passed away in 2004. His son, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, became the second President. He also passed away while in office in 2022. After his brother Khalifa's death, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was chosen as the third and current President on May 14, 2022.
