The President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the country's leader. This important role is held by someone who guides the nation and represents it to the world. The President is also the commander-in-chief of the UAE's armed forces.
The President and Vice Presidents are officially chosen every five years. They are elected by a group called the Federal Supreme Council. The prime minister of the United Arab Emirates is also officially appointed by the President.
In practice, the ruler of Abu Dhabi usually becomes the President. The ruler of Dubai usually becomes the Prime Minister.
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan is famous for bringing the seven emirates together. He helped form them into one country. He was the UAE's first President from 1971 until he passed away in 2004.
His son, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, became the next President. He served until his death in 2022. After his brother Khalifa passed away, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was elected. He became the third and current President of the UAE on May 14, 2022.
