Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum (born around 1941 – died January 4, 2006) was an important leader in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). People often called him Sheikh Maktoum. He served as the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE. He was also the emir (ruler) of Dubai.

Who Was Sheikh Maktoum?
Sheikh Maktoum was born in Dubai around 1943. At that time, Dubai was part of the Trucial States, which were under the protection of the United Kingdom. His father was Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who was also a very important ruler.
Early Life and Education
Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum grew up in Dubai. He received a good education, learning about leadership and the history of his region. He was prepared from a young age to take on important roles in his country.
Leading the United Arab Emirates
Sheikh Maktoum played a big part in forming the United Arab Emirates. This country was created in 1971 when several smaller states, including Dubai, joined together. He became the first Prime Minister of the UAE in 1971.
He served as Prime Minister for two periods. His first term was from 1971 to 1979. During this time, the UAE was just starting out. He helped set up the government and make important decisions for the new nation.
He became Prime Minister again in 1990 and served until his death in 2006. During his second term, the UAE grew a lot. He worked with the President of the UAE, Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to guide the country.
Ruler of Dubai
Besides being Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Maktoum was also the ruler of Dubai. He took over this role from his father, Sheikh Rashid, in 1990. As the ruler of Dubai, he helped make the city a modern and successful place.
He focused on developing Dubai's economy. He supported projects that helped Dubai become a global center for business and tourism. He also cared about sports, especially horse racing. He owned many racehorses and was well-known in the racing world.
His Family
Sheikh Maktoum was married to Alia bint Khalifa bin Saeed al Maktoum and Sheikha Bouchra bint Mohammad Al Maktoum. He came from the Al Maktoum family, which has ruled Dubai for a long time.
His Legacy
Sheikh Maktoum passed away on January 4, 2006, in Australia. He was a respected leader who helped shape the modern United Arab Emirates and Dubai. His brother, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, took over as the ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the UAE after him.
