History of Pretty Pine

The Pretty Pine Hotel

In September 1875, a new hotel was being built at a place called 'Pretty Pine'. This spot was on the road between Deniliquin and Wanganella. It was named after a very beautiful pine tree that grew there.

The hotel was built for Robert Holloway. He was a well-known person in the Riverina area. He had also worked as a coach driver for Cobb & Co, a famous transport company. By December 1875, his new hotel was open. It was officially named the Pretty Pine Hotel. In May 1876, a horse-racing event was held there to celebrate the Queen's Birthday.

Robert Holloway passed away in July 1878. After his death, his wife, Anastasia, took over running the Pretty Pine Hotel.

In November 1879, the land around the Pretty Pine Hotel was set aside for a new village. This village was to be called Dahwilly. This was the name of the local parish. However, people still preferred to call the area 'Pretty Pine'.

In 1880, Anastasia Holloway married Matthew Hole. He was also a former coach driver for Cobb and Co. In September 1881, Matthew Hole became the official owner of the Pretty Pine Hotel.

Growing the Community

Anastasia Hole died in April 1885. In May 1885, Sergeant George Rowe became the new owner of the Pretty Pine Hotel. He leased the property from Matthew Hole.

In June 1886, a large water tank was finished at Pretty Pine. This tank was built by the government. It helped make sure there was enough water for animals travelling through the area. Before this, finding water was a big problem for drovers (people who moved livestock). The tank had a well with a good water supply. It also had troughs where many sheep could drink at once. George Rowe, the hotel owner, managed the tank.

In August 1886, Miss Annie O'Mara became a teacher at the Pretty Pine Provisional school. Later, other teachers like Charles Norman and Miss Sarah Colls also taught there.

Pretty Pine was an important stop for coaches travelling from Deniliquin to Hay. In 1888, a traveller noted that the hotel was named after a special native pine tree. In 1889, the Pretty Pine Hotel was described as a large hotel with many buildings. It had stables for twenty horses and areas for livestock.

In January 1890, Matthew Hole sold the Pretty Pine Hotel to Ferdinand Turin.

In September 1890, a post office was planned for Pretty Pine. It opened soon after. By February 1891, a coaching company delivered mail to the Pretty Pine post office. This was part of their daily coach service between Deniliquin and Hay.

In February 1902, Ada Smith started teaching at the Pretty Pine Provisional School.

The post office at Pretty Pine closed in September 1942.

In 1949, people worked to start a school bus service. This service would take students from Pretty Pine and nearby areas to Deniliquin.
