History of the Prime Minister's Role
During President Vladislav Ardzinba's Time
The job of Prime Minister started in November 1994. This was when Abkhazia adopted its Constitution. Gennady Gagulia was the first person to become Prime Minister in January 1995.
Vladislav Ardzinba was the President from 1994 to 2005. During his time, several different people held the position of Prime Minister.
During President Sergei Bagapsh's Time
When Sergei Bagapsh became President in February 2005, he chose Alexander Ankvab as his Prime Minister. Ankvab later ran to be Vice President with Bagapsh in the 2009 election.
Because of the rules, Ankvab had to step down from his Prime Minister job temporarily. Leonid Lakerbaia took over his duties for a short time. After they won the election, Sergei Shamba, who had been the foreign affairs minister for a long time, became the new Prime Minister in February 2010.
During President Alexander Ankvab's Time
After Alexander Ankvab won the 2011 presidential election, Leonid Lakerbaia became the Prime Minister.
However, Lakerbaia resigned on June 2, 2014. This happened after a period of political changes in Abkhazia. Vladimir Delba, who was a Vice Premier, then became the acting Prime Minister.
During President Raul Khajimba's Time
Raul Khajimba won the 2014 presidential election. On September 29, 2014, he appointed Beslan Butba as the new Prime Minister.
Butba's time as Prime Minister was short. He resigned in March 2015. He said that the President's office had taken over many of the Prime Minister's duties. Shamil Adzynba briefly served as acting Prime Minister.
Then, on March 20, Artur Mikvabia was appointed as the new Prime Minister. Mikvabia also resigned on July 26, 2016. He explained that the government was trying to improve Abkhazia's money situation. He felt that public unrest was making it hard to work.
After Mikvabia's resignation, Shamil Adzynba again became acting Prime Minister. On August 5, Beslan Bartsits was appointed as the new Prime Minister.
