The Prime Minister of East Timor is the main leader of the government in East Timor. Their official title is the Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste. This role is very important for how the country is run every day.
The President of East Timor is the country's head of state. The President chooses the Prime Minister after national elections. Usually, the person chosen is the leader of the political party or group of parties that won the most seats in the National Parliament. The Prime Minister leads the government's team, called the cabinet, and makes sure the government's plans are carried out.
The current Prime Minister is Xanana Gusmão. He started his current term on 1 July 2023. He also served as Prime Minister before, from 2007 to 2015.
