Prince's Bay and other Staten Island South Shore communities were once popular spots for summer homes. Many people from Manhattan owned these homes. However, this changed when the water became more polluted in the mid-1900s. The neighborhood also had small hotels. The Christmas Tree Inn was one of the most well-known.
One block west of the Christmas Tree Inn is the South Campus of Staten Island University Hospital. This hospital is the southernmost acute-care facility in both New York City and New York State.
