Prince Abo (阿保親王 (Abo-shinnō)) was an important imperial prince in early Japan. He lived from 792 to 842, during the Heian period. This was a time when Japan's culture and arts became very strong. He was a son of Emperor Heizei.

Prince Abo's Life
Prince Abo was born in 792 in Kyoto, Japan's capital city at the time. His father was Emperor Heizei, and his mother was a court lady named Fujii no Fujiko (葛井藤子).
Life in Exile
In 810, there was a political event known as the Kusuko Incident (薬子の変, Kusuko no hen). Prince Abo was involved in this event. Because of his involvement, he was sent away from the capital. He was exiled to Dazaifu, which is in what is now Fukuoka Prefecture. There, he was given an important role as the Deputy Governor of Dazaifu (太宰権帥, Dazai no gon no sochi).
Return to the Capital
After many years, in 824, Prince Abo received a special pardon. This meant he was allowed to return to the capital city of Kyoto. This happened at the beginning of the Tenchō era.
His Talented Children
Prince Abo had several children who became famous. In 826, four of his sons were given the family name Ariwara. Two of these sons, Yukihira and Narihira, became very well-known poets. His other sons were Morihira (守平) and Nakahira (仲平). Another of his children was Ōe no Otondo (大江音人), who was a respected scholar and poet.
Later Years and Death
In 842, a plan for a rebellion, called the Jōwa Incident (承和の変, Jōwa no hen), was discovered. Prince Abo helped to reveal this plot by sending an anonymous report. He passed away in the same year, on October 22, 842.

Prince Abo's father was Emperor Heizei. His mother was a court lady named Fujii no Fujiko.
His Wife and Children
Prince Abo was married to Imperial Princess Ito. She was the eighth daughter of Emperor Kanmu. Together, they had two famous sons:
- Ariwara no Yukihira (born 818, died 893)
- Ariwara no Narihira (born 825, died 890)
He also had other children with another mother:
- Prince Kanemi (his eldest son)
- Ariwara no Nakahira (his second son)
- Ariwara no Morihei (his fourth son)
- Gyokei (his sixth son)
- A daughter who married Minamoto no Hiromu, a son of Emperor Saga
- Another daughter whose name is not known
