Prince Caspian is a brave and noble fictional character from The Chronicles of Narnia books by C. S. Lewis. He is also known as Caspian X and later becomes the King of Narnia. Caspian appears in several books, including Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and The Silver Chair. He also makes a brief appearance in The Last Battle.

Who is Prince Caspian?

Caspian is known for being noble, handsome, and brave. He always tries to be fair and just as a king. He loves the sea very much, which is why he is sometimes called Caspian the Seafarer.

Caspian's Early Life in Prince Caspian

When we first meet Caspian, he is a young prince and the nephew of King Miraz of Narnia. At this time, Narnia is very different. About 1300 years have passed since the rule of High King Peter and his siblings. The talking animals and magical creatures of Old Narnia have been forced into hiding by Caspian's ancestors, the Telmarines. Many people in Narnia believe these creatures are just myths.

When Caspian was a small boy, his nurse told him exciting stories about Old Narnia. These stories fascinated him. However, when he mentioned them to his uncle, King Miraz became angry and sent the nurse away.

Miraz then made Doctor Cornelius Caspian's tutor. Doctor Cornelius secretly had both dwarf and human blood. He taught Caspian the lessons Miraz wanted him to learn. But he also secretly told Caspian the true history of Narnia.

Doctor Cornelius revealed that Miraz had murdered Caspian's father, King Caspian IX. Miraz wanted to become king himself. At first, Miraz was okay with Caspian becoming king after him. But this changed when Miraz's wife had a son.

Doctor Cornelius warned the 13-year-old Caspian to escape. Miraz would now see Caspian as a threat to his own son's claim to the throne. Cornelius gave Caspian Queen Susan's magic horn. This horn could bring help to anyone who blew it.

Caspian fled and met many creatures he thought were only myths. The Old Narnians accepted him as their true king. When King Miraz attacked, Caspian blew the magic horn. This brought the old kings and queens of Narnia – Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy – back to Narnia. With the help of Aslan, they defeated Miraz in a big battle. This battle restored Old Narnia. Even though Caspian was a Telmarine, Aslan himself declared him the rightful king. He became King Caspian X.

Caspian's Adventures in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Three years after becoming king, Caspian had already won battles against the Giants of the North. He made them pay tribute to Narnia.

Caspian built a ship called the Dawn Treader. He sailed east to find seven Telmarine lords who had been loyal to his father. King Miraz had sent these lords away. During his journey, Caspian's crew found Edmund, Lucy, and their cousin Eustace in the water. They had been magically brought to Narnia.

The children helped Caspian and his crew sail towards the end of the world. They hoped to find the missing lords. At the end of the world, the brave mouse Reepicheep (who had fought in Prince Caspian) continued on to Aslan's Country. This place is described as a wonderful paradise. During the voyage, Caspian met the beautiful daughter of a retired star named Ramandu. They fell in love, married, and later had a son named Rilian.

Caspian as an Older King in The Silver Chair

In this story, Caspian is an old and unwell man. About ten years earlier, his wife had died from a serpent's bite. Their son Rilian rode off to get revenge but disappeared.

Eustace and his friend Jill Pole arrived in Narnia. They had escaped bullies at their school. They saw the elderly Caspian setting off to sea. He told his people he wanted to revisit places from his youth. But many believed he feared his son was lost forever. They thought he was seeking Aslan's help to find the next king of Narnia.

Meanwhile, Eustace and Jill rescued Prince Rilian. He had been held captive in an underworld by his mother's killer, the shapeshifting Lady of the Green Kirtle. Caspian returned to Narnia just in time to hug his son before he died. After his death, Aslan made Caspian young again in Aslan's Country. Caspian then went with Eustace and Jill back to their world for a short time. There, they helped deal with the bullies at their school.

Caspian's Final Appearance in The Last Battle

Caspian appears briefly at the very end of The Last Battle. This is the final book in the Narnia series. He is in Aslan's Country with many other main characters. They are all there at the end of the Narnian world.

How Caspian is Portrayed in Movies and TV

Prince Caspian has been played by different actors in TV shows and movies.

Early Portrayals

In the 1989 television series of Prince Caspian by the BBC, Jean Marc Perret played the teenage Caspian. In The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (also 1989), Samuel West played a slightly older Caspian. In The Silver Chair, Geoffrey Russell played the aged Caspian, and Jean Marc Perret returned to play the young Caspian again.

Modern Film Portrayals

In Walden Media's 2008 movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the character is played by English actor Ben Barnes. In this movie, the Telmarines are shown with Spanish backgrounds. So, Caspian has a Mediterranean accent, dark hair, and dark eyes. He is also older in the movie than in the book. He is almost an adult and struggles with wanting revenge against Miraz. The film also hints at a romantic interest between Caspian and Queen Susan. Before Susan returns to her own world for the last time, she gives Caspian a farewell kiss.

Ben Barnes played Caspian again in the sequel, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. In this film, Caspian has a beard to show that time has passed. His accent also changed to Barnes' natural English accent. Now in his early twenties, Caspian has become a wise and mature young man. He is on a journey to find the seven lost lords of Narnia. These lords were banished by his uncle.

During the voyage, he faces a challenge from an evil green mist. This mist shows him his greatest fear: that his father is disappointed in him. After defeating this evil, he is offered the chance to travel to Aslan's Country to find his father. But he chooses to stay in Narnia and continue being king. Caspian also finds a new love interest, who will become his wife. Before reaching the end of the world, he falls in love with Lilliandil, the beautiful daughter of Ramandu, whom he meets on Ramandu's Island.
