Edmund Pevensie facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Edmund "Ed" Pevensie is a famous character from C. S. Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia books. He appears as a main character in three books: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. He also has smaller parts in The Horse and His Boy and The Last Battle.

In the Narnia movies, Edmund is played by Skandar Keynes. An older Edmund is shown at the end of the first movie, played by Mark Wells.

In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Edmund makes some bad choices. He even betrays his brother and sisters to the White Witch. But as the story goes on, he realizes he was wrong and changes for the better. The books describe Edmund as having light blonde hair and grey eyes. He is the only Pevensie child with light hair, which Lewis said showed he was a bit of an outsider at first.

Edmund's Journey in Narnia

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

In The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Edmund is 10 years old. He is one of the main characters and changes the most throughout the story.

The book says Edmund started out nice but became mean after moving to a new school. However, in the 2005 movie, he is shown as upset because he and his siblings were sent away from home due to their father serving in the war.

Edmund is unkind to Lucy when she first finds Narnia through the wardrobe. He follows her into Narnia just to tease her. There, he meets Jadis, the White Witch, who pretends to be the Queen of Narnia. She gives him magical Turkish Delight, which makes him want more and more. Edmund promises the White Witch he will bring his siblings to her castle. He doesn't know she plans to kill them all to stop a Narnian prophecy. Even when Lucy mentions the White Witch, Edmund still wants more Turkish Delight and decides to go to the castle.

When Edmund returns to the normal world, he lies about being in Narnia. He doesn't want to admit Lucy was telling the truth.

Later, all four Pevensie children enter Narnia together. Edmund admits he has been there before. Mr. and Mrs. Beaver protect the children. But while they talk about Aslan's arrival, Edmund sneaks away to the White Witch's castle. He hopes to become a prince and later a king.

However, his opinion of the Witch changes quickly. She scolds him for coming without his siblings. He is even more shocked when they see creatures enjoying a feast made by Father Christmas. The creatures say Father Christmas has entered Narnia, which means the Witch's power is weakening. The Witch then turns them to stone.

Edmund now realizes the White Witch is truly evil. He wishes he could be with his brother and sisters. The Witch's sledge stops as the snow melts, another sign of her weakening power. They continue on foot. In a wooded valley, the Witch prepares to kill Edmund for betraying her. She ties him to a tree and takes out a dagger. But a rescue party sent by Aslan arrives, frees Edmund, and takes him to his siblings. Edmund is truly sorry after a long talk with Aslan. Aslan tells the Pevensies to forgive Edmund and forget his mistakes.

The next day, the Witch claims Edmund's life belongs to her. She and Aslan make a secret agreement: Aslan will die in Edmund's place. The Witch doesn't know that the magic of this agreement will bring Aslan back to life. Susan and Lucy witness Aslan's return.

While Aslan, Lucy, and Susan race to free the stone prisoners in the Witch's castle, Edmund joins Peter's army in the battle. He bravely breaks the White Witch's dangerous wand, getting wounded in the process. The Witch's army is quickly defeated, and she is killed by Aslan.

Edmund is saved from death by Aslan and Lucy. Lucy gives him a few drops of a magic cordial that can quickly heal any injury.

After he heals, Edmund is crowned King Edmund the Just by Aslan. He rules Narnia with Queen Lucy, Queen Susan, and High King Peter. He is also made Duke of Lantern Waste, Count of the Western March, and a Knight of the Noble Order of the Table.

Fifteen years later, he and his siblings return to England. They all become children again.

Prince Caspian

Edmund and his siblings return to Narnia to help Caspian become the rightful King against King Miraz. Edmund convinces Trumpkin the dwarf that they are the legendary Kings and Queens by beating him in a sword-fighting practice. Later, he helps Peter and Trumpkin defend Caspian from Nikabrik (the black dwarf), a hag, and a were-wolf. Edmund also watches Peter's sword duel against King Miraz.

Edmund has become much more caring towards Lucy. He is the first to believe her when she "sees" Aslan, supporting her against Trumpkin and his other siblings' doubts. In this book, Edmund is shown to be much nicer than he was in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

In the movie, Edmund is very mature. He stays out of Peter and Caspian's arguments. He also stops the White Witch from being brought back to life by smashing the ice wall she is trying to escape from.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Edmund, Lucy, and their cousin Eustace return to Narnia through a painting. They end up in the ocean and are rescued by King Caspian. They join him on the ship, the Dawn Treader, as he searches for three missing Lords. This is Edmund and Lucy's last adventure in Narnia, as Aslan tells them they are getting too old to come back. By this time, Edmund has matured a lot. This is clear in how he deals with Eustace and in his arguments with King Caspian. Edmund has also completely stopped insulting Lucy.

The Horse and His Boy

King Edmund, Queen Susan, and Mr. Tumnus the Faun visit the country of Calormen. There, Prince Rabadash wants Susan to marry him. Edmund mistakes Shasta for the missing Prince Corin of Archenland, Narnia's ally. He scolds the boy for running off and making everyone worried. The Narnians escape thanks to Tumnus' clever plan. This makes Rabadash convince his father to invade Archenland and Narnia.

Shasta meets Edmund again in Anvard. Edmund reminds Shasta that he should not eavesdrop. Edmund and King Lune of Archenland lead the fight against the Calormene army and win.

The Last Battle

After dreaming of King Tirian in Narnia asking for help, Peter and Edmund go to an old house in London. They dig up magic rings that Professor Kirke buried there long ago. These rings are meant for Eustace and Jill to reach Narnia. Peter and Edmund are waiting for the others at the train platform when a terrible accident happens.

When King Tirian sees the Seven Friends of Narnia in his dream, he thinks that Edmund and Peter "had already the face of a King and a warrior".

Edmund joins everyone, except Susan, in Aslan's country. Like Peter and Lucy, he is killed in the train crash and goes back to Aslan's country. There, they can all live forever in a peaceful way.
