Egon, Prinz von Fürstenberg (born Eduard Egon Peter Paul Giovanni Prinz zu Fürstenberg; June 29, 1946 – June 11, 2004) was a well-known person in society, a banker, and a designer of fashion and interiors. He was a member of the old German princely family of Fürstenberg.
In 1969, he married fashion designer Diane Halfin. They had two children, Alexandre Egon (born 1970) and Tatiana Desirée (born 1971). The couple separated in 1973 and later divorced in 1983. In the same year, he married Lynn Marshall.
Fürstenberg wrote two books about fashion and home design. He also started his own interior design company. He passed away in Rome on June 11, 2004.
Family Background
Eduard Egon Peter Paul Giovanni Prinz zu Fürstenberg was born on June 29, 1946, in Lausanne, Switzerland. He was the older son of Prince Tassilo zu Fürstenberg (1903–1989) and his first wife, Clara Agnelli (1920-2016). Clara was the older sister of Fiat's chairman, Gianni Agnelli. After his mother, Clara, left, his father married Cecilie Amelia Hudson.
Egon's younger brother is Prince Sebastian zu Fürstenberg. His sister is the socialite and actress Princess Ira zu Fürstenberg.
Life and Career
Egon von Fürstenberg grew up in a privileged environment in Venice, Italy. He earned a degree in economics from the University of Geneva. After his studies, he spent 14 months working as a teacher in Burundi as part of a peace mission. He then worked for two years as an investment banker in New York.
While studying at university, he met Diane Simone Michelle Halfin. They married on July 16, 1969, in France. Diane later opened her own fashion house in New York, where she became famous for creating the wrap dress.
Egon began his career as a buyer for Macy's. At the same time, he took night classes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parson's School of Design.
The von Fürstenbergs had two children: Alexandre Egon (born 1970) and Tatiana Desirée (born 1971). They divorced in 1983.
Fürstenberg started his own work as a fashion designer in 1977. He first designed clothes for plus-size women. Later, he expanded his work to include full fashion lines, fragrances, and custom-made clothing based in Rome. He also designed ready-to-wear clothing for a wider audience.
Fürstenberg wrote two popular books. The Power Look (1978) was a guide to fashion and good taste. The Power Look at Home: Decorating for Men (1980) was about home furnishings. In 1981, he opened his own interior design company. He also showcased his designs at Alta Moda days in Rome in 1991.
Egon von Fürstenberg collected art, including works by Zachary Selig. He passed away at Spallanzani Hospital in Rome on June 11, 2004.
