Princess Charlotte of Saxe-Meiningen was born on September 11, 1751, in Frankfurt am Main. Her full German name was Marie Charlotte Amalie Ernestine Wilhelmine Philippine, Prinzessin von Sachsen-Meiningen. She was a princess from the House of Saxe-Meiningen.

Later, she became the Duchess consort of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. This happened when she married Ernest II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. She passed away on April 25, 1827, in Genoa, which was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia at that time.

Early Life and Family

Princess Charlotte was born on September 11, 1751. She was the oldest child and daughter of Anton Ulrich, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen. Her mother was Landgravine Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Philippsthal. Charlotte had two younger brothers. They were Charles William, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen and George I, Duke of Saxe-Meiningen.

Marriage and Royal Life

Charlotte married Ernest, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg on March 21, 1769. The wedding took place in Meiningen. Ernest later became the Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. His parents were Frederick III, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Luise Dorothea of Saxe-Meiningen.

Charlotte and Ernest had four children:

  1. Ernest, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (born in Gotha on February 27, 1770 – died in Gotha on December 3, 1779).
  2. Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (born in Gotha on November 23, 1772 – died in Gotha on May 27, 1822).
  3. Frederick IV, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (born in Gotha on November 28, 1774 – died in Gotha on February 11, 1825).
  4. Prince Ludwig of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (born in Gotha on October 21, 1777 – died in Gotha on October 26, 1777).

Charlotte's husband, Ernest, was known as an "enlightened" ruler. This means he believed in using reason and science to improve society. He was also a great supporter of art and science. He helped his country become a center of culture. Charlotte helped him with these cultural projects.

Charlotte's Love for Astronomy

Like her husband, Charlotte was a "patron" of astronomy. A patron is someone who supports artists or scientists. She helped the court astronomer Franz Xaver von Zach. She even took part in observing the stars and planets herself.

Charlotte also attended the First European Astronomy Congress in 1798. This important meeting took place at the Seeberg Observatory. She wrote letters to the most important astronomers of her time. This shows her deep interest and knowledge in the field.

Later Life and Travels

After her husband Ernest passed away in 1804, Charlotte faced some challenges with her son, Augustus. He had taken over as ruler. Charlotte decided to leave Gotha with Franz Xaver von Zach. They spent some time in Eisenberg.

Later, she traveled with Zach through southern Europe. She lived for several years in Marseilles. Eventually, she settled in Genoa, where she died in 1827.
