Princess Marie of Hesse and by Rhine was a young princess from Germany. She was the youngest child of Princess Alice and Louis IV, who was the Grand Duke of Hesse. Marie lived a short life, passing away at just four years old.
Princess Marie's Short Life
Princess Marie Viktoria Feodore Leopoldine was born on May 24, 1874, in Darmstadt, a city in the Grand Duchy of Hesse. This was a German state at the time. She was the seventh and last child born to her parents.
Her Royal Family
Marie's mother, Princess Alice, was a daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. This made Marie a granddaughter of one of the most famous queens in history! Her father, Louis IV, was the ruler of the Grand Duchy of Hesse.
Marie had several older brothers and sisters:
- Victoria, who later became the Marchioness of Milford Haven.
- Elisabeth, who became Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia.
- Irene, who married her cousin Prince Henry of Prussia.
- Ernest Louis, who became the last Grand Duke of Hesse.
- Frederick, who sadly died very young.
- Alix, who later became Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia.
A Sad Time
In 1878, a serious illness called diphtheria spread through the region of Hesse. Diphtheria is a very contagious bacterial infection that can make it hard to breathe and swallow. It was a very dangerous disease, especially for children, before vaccines were developed.
Sadly, Marie and several of her siblings became very ill with diphtheria. Her brother Ernst and sisters Victoria, Irene, and Alix also caught the disease.
Princess Marie passed away from diphtheria on November 16, 1878, when she was only four years old. Just a few weeks later, her mother, Princess Alice, also died from the same illness. Marie was buried alongside her mother.
