Profanity facts for kids
Profanity, also known as cursing, swearing, or bad language, is a way of using words that many people find offensive or impolite. It can be seen as rude or culturally inappropriate. In some religions, using profanity is considered a sin.
Sometimes, people use profanity to show strong feelings, like anger or frustration. Other times, these words are used to make a statement stronger, like saying "that was really, really good!" but with a different word.
In an older meaning, "profanity" also referred to showing a lack of respect for things that are considered sacred or holy. This could mean disrespecting religious beliefs or places.
What Does "Profanity" Mean?
The word profane comes from an old Latin word, profanus. This word literally means "outside the temple." It combines pro, meaning 'outside', and fanum, meaning 'temple' or 'holy place'.
So, originally, "profane" meant something that was not holy or was outside of religious use. Over time, it started to mean showing disrespect for holy things or having a non-religious purpose.
It's important to know the difference between profanity and blasphemy. Blasphemy is a more serious offense, directly attacking religion or religious figures. Profanity, in its original sense, was more about not caring about religious things.
A Quick Look at History
Words that we now consider profanity were quite common in everyday talk during medieval times in England. Later, during the time of William Shakespeare, some writers like Shakespeare himself often avoided using these words directly in their plays. However, other playwrights, such as Ben Jonson, did include them in their works.
Profanity vs. Slurs
It's helpful to understand the difference between profanity and slurs.
- Profanity is generally seen as socially offensive and impolite.
- Slurs are words specifically meant to insult or harm another person or group. They are always derogatory.
While profanity can sometimes be used to express strong emotions or even relieve stress, slurs are always intended to be hurtful. Even though slurs are a type of offensive language, not all profanity is a slur. Profanity can be used in a general way, but slurs are always directed at someone or a group.
