The Promenade at Granite Run is a cool place in Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It's near Philadelphia. This area has homes, shops, and fun entertainment. It opened in 2018. Before that, it was a big shopping center called the Granite Run Mall. The mall was open from 1974 to 2015. Two of the original stores, Boscov's and Sears, stayed open when the mall changed.
The Story of Granite Run Mall
The place we now call the Promenade at Granite Run first opened as the Granite Run Mall in 1974. It was a popular shopping spot for many years.
In 1986, a store called Gimbels changed its name to Stern's. Later, in 1993, Boscov's took over the Stern's spot. At its busiest time, the Granite Run Mall had 125 different stores!
As time went on, in the 2000s, the mall started to have more empty stores. The owners began to think about selling it. In 2011, the mall was given back to its lender. A new company, Madison Marquette, took over. They planned to make the mall better. They wanted to improve the lights, parking, and sidewalks. They also hoped to fill the empty stores.
How the Mall Changed
On September 23, 2013, a company called BET Investments bought the Granite Run Mall. They wanted to turn it into a new kind of place. This new place would have homes, shops, and entertainment.
The first ideas for the new project were to keep the three main department stores. The rest of the mall would be torn down. In its place, there would be an outdoor area with shops and restaurants. The plans also included building two apartment buildings. These would have 365 apartments in total. They also planned for a bigger movie theater and separate restaurants.
On August 25, 2014, new plans were shared. The three department stores would still stay. The top floor of the JCPenney store would become a movie theater. The inside of the mall would be taken down. It would become an outdoor shopping and dining area with fancy places. One large apartment building with 385 apartments was also planned.
The plans changed again on October 27, 2014. Now, two apartment buildings with 388 apartments would be built. One would be where the movie theater was. The other would be where an old restaurant used to be. The project would happen in two main steps. First, the mall's inside would be torn down, and one apartment building would be built. Second, the old movie theater would be torn down, and the other apartment building would be built.
In January 2015, the JCPenney store announced it would close in April. This was part of a plan to close many stores across the country. Because of this, the mall decided to tear down the old JCPenney building. They would build new shops and a movie theater there instead.
The inside of the mall closed on July 1, 2015. Only Sears and Boscov's stayed open. On November 9, 2015, the final plans for the new development were approved. The new place would be called the Promenade at Granite Run. Workers started tearing down the old mall in 2016. The Promenade at Granite Run was built through 2017. It officially opened in 2018.
