The Prosartes maculata is a cool plant from North America. People often call it the yellow mandarin, spotted mandarin, or nodding mandarin. It's part of the lily family. This plant is a perennial, which means it lives for many years, and its beautiful flowers bloom in the spring.
Meet the Spotted Mandarin Plant
This interesting plant is native to the Great Smoky Mountains. You can also find it in other parts of the Appalachian region. This area stretches from northern Georgia and northeastern Alabama up to southern West Virginia and southern Ohio.
Years ago, there were some reports of this plant growing near Detroit, Michigan. However, these plants are no longer found there, likely because cities grew and changed the land.
What Does It Look Like?
The Prosartes maculata is a type of herb. It can grow quite tall, reaching up to 80 centimeters (about 31 inches) in height.
Its flowers are very special. They are shaped like bells and hang downward, which is why one of its common names is "nodding mandarin." The flowers are a lovely cream color and have unique purple spots on them.
