Prunus gentryi is a type of wild cherry tree. It belongs to the Prunus group, which includes many fruits like cherries, plums, and peaches. This tree is found in the mountains of Mexico, specifically in the states of Chihuahua and Sonora. It likes to grow near rivers and streams in the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. Scientists first described this plant in 1937.

What Does Prunus gentryi Look Like?

This tree can grow quite tall, reaching up to 12 meters (about 39 feet). Its leaves are special because they are thick and feel a bit like leather. They are dark green on top and a lighter shade underneath.

The tree produces fruits that are juicy and safe to eat. Most of the time, these fruits are purple. However, there is a rare type found in Chihuahua that has yellow fruits. Scientists call this yellow-fruited type Prunus gentryi forma flavipulpa.

How People Use Prunus gentryi

The Pima Bajo are a group of people who live in the mountains near Yepachic, Chihuahua. They have a special name for this tree and its fruits: "aguasiqui."

The fruits of Prunus gentryi are a very important food for them. They ripen in late summer, offering a tasty treat.
