The Pseudagrion malabaricum, also known as the Malabar sprite or jungle grass dart, is a type of damselfly. It belongs to the family Coenagrionidae. You can find this interesting insect in countries like India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.

What Does the Malabar Sprite Look Like?

This damselfly is medium-sized. It has cool blue eyes that are dark on top. Adult Malabar sprites have a black area on the back of their heads.

Its body, called the thorax, is a bright sky-blue color. It has wide black stripes on its back, middle, and shoulders. The first two parts of its long body (abdomen) are blue with black marks on top. The mark on the second part often looks like a fancy cup or a thistle flower.

Parts three to seven of its abdomen are black on top and blue on the sides. Parts eight and nine are blue with thin black rings at the end. The tenth part is black on top and blue on the sides.

The male damselfly has special parts at the end of its body called superior anal appendages. These are black and spread outwards, then curve inwards at their tips. They are smaller than the tenth body part. The inferior anal appendages are very tiny.

How Do Females Look Different?

Female Malabar sprites have bluish-green eyes and a bluish-green thorax. Their bodies are marked in a similar way to the males, but the colors are a bit lighter. Parts eight and nine of their abdomen are black with thin blue rings. The tenth part is a pale blue.

Where Does the Malabar Sprite Live?

The Malabar sprite likes to live near water. It breeds in places like ponds, lakes, and wet areas. You can also find them in paddy fields and marshes, especially in the hills.
