Pszów is a town in Wodzisław County, Silesian Voivodeship, Poland. In 2019, about 13,896 people lived there.
The town is located on the Rybnik Plateau. It is close to other cities like Rybnik, Wodzisław Śląski, and Racibórz. Pszów covers an area of 20.42 square kilometers. From 1975 to 1994, Pszów was actually part of Wodzisław Śląski.
History of Pszów
Pszów was first mentioned in the year 1265. Back then, it was called Psov. It was given special rights called Magdeburg rights. These rights allowed the town to govern itself more freely.
In 1293, the first wooden church was built in Pszów. Over many centuries, Pszów became part of different countries. It was once part of the Kingdom of Poland. Later, it belonged to the Kingdom of Bohemia and the Habsburg monarchy. It also became part of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire.
After a series of events called the Silesian Uprisings, Pszów joined the Second Polish Republic in 1922. Pszów officially became a city in 1954. Today, it is part of the Rybnik Coal Area. This area is known for its coal mines. The Coal Mine Rydułtowy-Anna is partly located in Pszów.
Sports in Pszów
Pszów has one main sports club called Górnik Pszów. It was started in 1924. This club is most famous for its amazing boxers.
Some of the well-known boxers from Pszów include Andrzej Biegalski. Another famous boxer is Bogdan Gajda. He won a gold medal at the 1977 European Amateur Boxing Championships. Zbigniew Kicka also brought fame to Pszów. He won a bronze medal at the 1974 World Amateur Boxing Championships.
