Becoming Pharaoh: A Young Ruler's Start
Ptolemy XIV became pharaoh when he was about 12 years old. This happened after his older brother, Ptolemy XIII Theos Philopator, passed away on January 13, 47 BC. According to his brother's wishes, Ptolemy XIV was named co-ruler alongside his older sister, Cleopatra VII.
Ruling with Cleopatra
Ptolemy XIV and Cleopatra were married, which was a tradition in the royal family. However, Cleopatra was the one who held the real power. She was also closely allied with the powerful Roman leader Julius Caesar. Ptolemy XIV's role was mainly to follow Egyptian traditions. He was a pharaoh in name, but Cleopatra made the important decisions.
The End of His Reign
Julius Caesar was tragically killed in Rome on March 15, 44 BC. He was murdered by a group of important Romans, including Brutus and Cassius. Ptolemy XIV died soon after Caesar. Records show he was alive on July 26, 44 BC.
Succession and Mystery
It is thought that Cleopatra might have caused his death. She may have wanted her son, Caesarion (Ptolemy XV Caesar), to become co-ruler instead. Caesarion was Julius Caesar's son. He was named co-ruler on September 2, 44 BC. The exact cause of Ptolemy XIV's death is not fully known.
