Pueblo Mall is a popular shopping mall in Pueblo, Colorado, U.S. It first opened its doors in 1976. This mall has big stores like Dillard's and J. C. Penney. These are called "anchor stores" because they are usually the largest stores and attract many shoppers. Other cool places inside include Jo-Ann Fabrics, Planet Fitness, and Altitude Trampoline Park. Centennial Real Estate takes care of the mall and owns it.

The Mall's Story

How Pueblo Mall Started

Pueblo Mall first opened in 1976. A company called The Hahn Company built it. When it first opened, it had four main "anchor stores." These were Montgomery Ward, The Denver Dry Goods Company, Joslins, and J. C. Penney. The Joslins store at the mall replaced an older store that was in downtown Pueblo.

Changes Over Time

Over the years, some of the original stores changed.

  • In 1987, The Denver Dry Goods Company closed down. Its spot was taken over by a store called Mervyn's.
  • In 1998, the entire Joslins chain of stores was sold. The Joslins store at Pueblo Mall then became a Dillard's.
  • In 2001, Montgomery Ward closed its business. A store called Sears moved into that space. Sears had moved from another shopping center nearby.

New Stores and Fun Places

More changes happened in the 2000s:

  • Mervyn's closed all its stores in Colorado in 2005. Part of its building became Sports Authority.
  • The back part of the old Mervyn's store was empty for a while. Then, in 2014, Planet Fitness opened there.
  • Sports Authority closed in 2016. In 2019, a fun trampoline park called Altitude Trampoline Park opened in its place.
  • Sears also closed its doors in 2019.

Why Pueblo Mall Is Special

In 2017, a big newspaper called The Washington Post wrote about Pueblo Mall. They said it was a great example of a smaller mall that was still doing well. This is important because many malls have struggled due to online shopping. The article noted a few reasons for Pueblo Mall's success:

  • It has many different kinds of stores.
  • Lots of people live in the area around Pueblo, so there are many shoppers.
  • The people living near Pueblo generally have good incomes.
