Puerta del Cambrón facts for kids
The Puerta del Cambrón is an old city gate in the city of Toledo, Spain. You can find it on the west side of the city. This gate has had other names in the past, like "Gate of the Jews" or "Gate of Saint Leocadia."
People think the name del Cambrón might come from a thorny bush. A plant like this may have grown on top of one of the gate's towers. This would have been before the gate was rebuilt in 1576. Today, the Puerta del Cambrón is considered a very important cultural site.
What makes the gate special?
The Puerta del Cambrón was built in the Renaissance style. It has two sets of towers and two arches. The gate is made from strong stone and brick.
How the gate changed over time
The gate was updated twice in the 1570s, once in the early part of the decade and again in 1576. Famous sculptors like Hernán González, Diego de Velasco, and Juan Bautista Monegro worked on the gate. They created a sculpture of Leocadia for it. The gate was not badly damaged during the Spanish Civil War.
