Pugneys Country Park is a large park covering about 250-acre (1.0 km2). It's located near Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, close to the A636 road and the M1 motorway. This special place is also known as a Local Nature Reserve, which means it's protected for its wildlife and natural beauty.

Discover Pugneys Country Park

Pugneys Country Park is a popular spot for families and nature lovers. It offers a mix of outdoor activities and peaceful natural areas. The park was created from an old opencast mine (where minerals are dug from the ground) and a sand and gravel quarry (a place where stone or sand is dug out). It first opened its doors to the public in 1985. You can even see the historic Sandal Castle looking over the park!

What Can You Do at Pugneys?

The park has two main lakes, each with a different purpose.

  • Big Lake Fun: The larger lake is perfect for exciting non-powered watersports. This means you can enjoy activities like sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding without using motors. It's a great place to learn new skills or just have fun on the water.
  • Nature's Quiet Corner: The smaller lake is a peaceful nature reserve. This area is kept calm and undisturbed so that local wildlife can thrive. It's a fantastic spot for birdwatching or simply enjoying the quiet beauty of nature.

All Aboard the Miniature Railway!

For a fun ride, Pugneys Country Park has a miniature railway. It runs on a special 7 14 in (184 mm) gauge track around part of the larger lake. The train operates on weekends and during bank holidays, offering a charming way to see the park. If you get hungry or thirsty, there are also cafeteria facilities available.

Wildlife at the Park

The nature reserve at Pugneys is home to many different animals, especially birds. You might see a large group of swans, with sometimes up to 100 of them living there! These swans don't usually breed at the park, but they enjoy staying there. The park's lakes also play an important role in flood defence. They act like a safety overflow for the nearby River Calder, helping to prevent flooding in the area.
