Pukepoto is a small town in the Northland area of New Zealand. It is located southwest of Kaitaia and northeast of Ahipara. The Herekino Forest is found to its southeast.
The name Pukepoto comes from a special cobalt blue color. This color is found in a type of clay rock.

Marae in Pukepoto
A marae is a special meeting place for Māori people. It is a very important part of Māori culture and community life. Pukepoto has two marae connected to the iwi (tribe) of Te Rarawa.
These marae are linked to the maunga (mountain) of Taumatamahoe and the repo/wai (water/wetland) of Tāngonge. People from these marae trace their family history back to important ancestors. These include Tumoana, who was a captain of the Tinana waka (canoe).
The Te Rarawa Marae and its meeting house are connected to the hapū (sub-tribes) of Ngāti Te Ao and Te Uri o Hina.
The Te Uri o Hina Marae and its Hohourongo meeting house are also connected to the hapū of Ngāti Te Ao, Tahāwai, and Te Uri o Hina.
In 2020, the New Zealand Government provided money to improve these marae. This project also helped create jobs in the area.
Education in Pukepoto
Pukepoto School is a primary school for students in years 1 to 6. It has a roll of 36 students. The school might have started as a mission school way back in 1866.
