Where is Pulo do Lobo?
Pulo do Lobo is about 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) north of a town called Mértola. This area is in the Lower Alentejo region of Portugal. The waterfall is in a very narrow part of the Guadiana River. It is located at a height of about 33 to 35 meters (108 to 115 feet) above sea level.
The Guadiana River
The Pulo do Lobo waterfall is formed by the Guadiana River. This important river acts as a natural border, separating the countries of Spain and Portugal. The waterfall creates a very impressive and powerful sight. The area around it is also home to many different kinds of native plants and animals.
The famous Portuguese writer, José Saramago, once described this part of the Guadiana River. He wrote that the "river boils between harsh walls." He also mentioned how the water's rushing sound, hitting the rocks, slowly shapes the land over thousands of years.
