Pumphrey is a small area in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in the United States. It used to be called a "census-designated place" (CDP). A CDP is a special area the government uses to collect information about people. In 2000, about 5,317 people lived there. Later, for the 2010 census, Pumphrey was divided. It became part of two other areas: Linthicum and Brooklyn Park.

History of Pumphrey

The land where Pumphrey is located today was once owned by a man named Charles Pumphrey. This was back in 1878, according to old maps of Anne Arundel County. The area is near the West Branch of the Patapsco River.

Charles Pumphrey was related to Walter Pumphrey. Walter was a Quaker, which is a type of Christian religious group. He moved from England to America in 1678. Walter first arrived in Burlington, New Jersey. Then, in 1708, he moved to the Baltimore area. He was a carpenter and helped many Quakers there. He bought land in northern Anne Arundel County to get wood. A marshy area between what is now Linthicum and Pumphrey was even known as "Pumphrey's Swamp" for a while.
