Puncak Jaya is a very tall mountain. It is the highest mountain on the island of New Guinea. People also call it Mount Carstensz or the Carstensz Pyramid. It is a famous peak for climbers. This mountain is part of the Sudirman Range in Papua Province, Indonesia.

About Puncak Jaya
Puncak Jaya stands at 4,884 meters (16,024 feet) high. This makes it the highest point in Indonesia. It is also the highest mountain on the entire continent of Oceania. Because of its height, Puncak Jaya is one of the "Seven Summits". The Seven Summits are the highest mountains on each of the seven continents.
Where is Puncak Jaya?
This amazing mountain is located in the western part of the island of New Guinea. This area is called Papua Province in Indonesia. The mountain is part of a large mountain range. This range is known as the Sudirman Range.
Climbing Puncak Jaya
Climbing Puncak Jaya is a big challenge. The easiest way to climb it involves rock, snow, and ice. The weather can be very cold and unpredictable. Climbers need special gear and skills to reach the top.
First Ascent of Puncak Jaya
The first time someone successfully climbed Puncak Jaya was in 1962. A team of four climbers made it to the summit. The team was led by Heinrich Harrer. He was an Austrian explorer and mountaineer. The other climbers were Philip Temple, Russell Kippax, and Albert Huizenga. Their climb was a major achievement in mountain climbing history.
Glaciers on Puncak Jaya
Puncak Jaya used to have several glaciers. Glaciers are huge sheets of ice that move very slowly. However, these glaciers have been shrinking quickly. This is due to climate change. Scientists are watching them closely. They expect the glaciers to disappear completely very soon.
Why are the Glaciers Shrinking?
The glaciers on Puncak Jaya are melting because of rising temperatures. This is a global problem. It shows how climate change affects even the highest places on Earth. The loss of these glaciers changes the mountain's environment.
