Special Status for the Pagadi

In 2009, the Puneri Pagadi received a special status. It was given a Geographic Indication (GI) tag. This means the pagadi is officially linked to Pune. It helps protect its unique identity.

Because of this GI tag, only turbans made in Pune can be called "Puneri Pagadi." No one outside Pune can sell a turban using this special name. This helps keep the tradition and culture of Pune safe.

How the Puneri Pagadi Is Used

The pagadi is worn for many different events. It is often seen at weddings. It is also used during special events in schools and colleges. These events are often called "traditional days."

Actors wear the pagadi when they perform the gondhal art form. Sometimes, the pagadi is even given as an award. This shows how important and respected it is in Pune.

Protecting the Puneri Pagadi

A group of ten people formed the Shree Puneri Pagadi Sangh. This group worked to get the GI tag for the pagadi. They wanted to protect its unique identity. They also wanted to preserve the Puneri culture.

Their application was accepted. On September 4, 2009, the pagadi became an intellectual property. This means its name and design are legally protected. Other Indian products also have GI tags. These include Tirupati ladoos, Darjeeling tea, and Banarasi saris.
