The Punta Borinquen Light (also called Faro de Punta Borinquen) is a lighthouse in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. It stands on the land of the old Ramey Air Force Base.
This important lighthouse was first built in 1889 by the Spanish government. When the Panama Canal opened in 1914, the lighthouse became super important. It helped guide ships traveling from Europe to Panama.
In 1917, the U.S. Congress decided to fund a new lighthouse. They wanted to build it on higher ground for better safety.
However, before the new lighthouse could be built, a big earthquake hit in 1918. This earthquake, called the 1918 San Fermín earthquake, badly damaged the first lighthouse.
The new lighthouse was finished in 1922. Today, it still helps guide ships safely. It also provides housing for the United States Coast Guard.
