Exploring Punta de Tarifa

Where is Tarifa Point?

This important point is found in southern Spain, within the province of Cádiz. It marks the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean side of the famous Strait of Gibraltar. This strait is a narrow waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.

The Island's Story

Punta de Tarifa was once part of a small island. This island was known as Isla de Tarifa or Isla de Las Palomas. Today, a special road called a causeway connects the island to the mainland. For many years, between the 1930s and 2001, the island was used by the military.

How Tarifa Got Its Name

The name "Tarifa" comes from a person named Tarif ibn Malik. In the year 711, he started the Islamic conquest of Hispania right from this area. This is how both the island and the nearby town got their names.
