Puquio is a town located in the heart of Peru, a country in South America. Its name comes from the Quechua word Pukyu, which means "spring of water." This name is very fitting because water is important to the area.
Puquio is the main town, or capital, of the Lucanas area. This province is part of the larger Ayacucho region in Peru. About 15,870 people live in Puquio. It sits high up in the mountains, at an elevation of 3,214 meters (about 10,545 feet) above sea level.
What's the Weather Like in Puquio?
The weather in Puquio is quite interesting because of its high location. It has two main seasons: a rainy season and a dry season.
Rainy Season
The rainy season usually runs from December to March. During these months, Puquio gets most of its rainfall. January, February, and March are the wettest months, with over 100 millimeters (about 4 inches) of rain each. The temperatures are mild, with highs around 16-17 degrees Celsius (61-63 degrees Fahrenheit) and lows around 6-7 degrees Celsius (43-45 degrees Fahrenheit).
Dry Season
From May to September, Puquio experiences its dry season. There is very little rain during this time, sometimes less than 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) a month. The days are still mild, with highs around 17-18 degrees Celsius (63-64 degrees Fahrenheit). However, the nights get much colder, with lows dropping to 2-4 degrees Celsius (36-39 degrees Fahrenheit). This means you might need a warm jacket even in the summer months!
