Purépero de Echáiz is a town in Mexico. It is located in the northwest part of the state of Michoacán. This town is also the main city of the Purépero municipality.
Purépero is found in the middle of the Tarascan Plateau. It is about 113 kilometers (70 miles) from Morelia, the state capital. The town shares borders with other places. To the north is Tlazazalca, to the east is Zacapu, to the south is Chilchota, and to the west is Tangancícuaro.

What Does Purépero Mean?
The name Purépero comes from the Tarascan language. It has a few possible meanings. One idea is "place of commoners," which means a place for regular people. Another meaning could be "those who are visiting." A third suggestion is "place of the indigenous people."

Who Lives in Purépero?
Population and Education
In 2010, Purépero de Echáiz had a total population of 15,306 people. There were 7,423 men and 7,883 women living there.
Many people in Purépero have gone to school. In 2010, 7,352 people over the age of five had finished primary school. Among adults over eighteen, 692 had a professional degree. Also, 49 people had a postgraduate degree.
In 2009, many students graduated. There were 285 graduates from preschool. Primary schools saw 272 students finish. High schools had 159 graduates that year.
Learning to read and write is important in Purépero. In 2010, almost everyone aged 15 to 24 could read and write. The literacy rate for this age group was 98.7%. For young men, it was 98.1%, and for young women, it was 99.3%.
Purépero's Culture and Fun
Festivals and Celebrations
The biggest celebration in Purépero honors John the Baptist. He is the patron saint of the town. This festival takes place every year from June 20 to June 25.
On June 24, the main day of the festival, there are special dances. Different groups of workers perform these dances. You might see dances by bakers, horse trainers, blacksmiths, and reboceros (people who make shawls). Many Pureperenses (people from Purépero) who live elsewhere come back home for this special event.
Other fun feast days are also celebrated in Purépero de Echáiz:
- The festival of Saint Isidore is on May 15. People celebrate with a parade of wagons.
- On November 22, the festival of Saint Cecilia is held. There is a parade and performances by local mariachi groups. Two famous groups are Ordaz and the Cendejas.
- The feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12.
The people of Purépero also celebrate important national holidays. These include the Fiestas Patrias, which are Mexico's patriotic celebrations.
