Tarascan Plateau facts for kids
The Tarascan Plateau (also called the Purépecha Plateau) is a special area in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It's a type of landform called a plateau, which is a flat area of high ground.
This plateau starts at the bottom of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, a chain of volcanoes. It has a mild climate and gets water from the Lerma River and other smaller rivers. You can also find several beautiful lakes here, like Lake Pátzcuaro, Lake Cuitzeo, and Lake Zirahuén.
History of the Tarascan Plateau
The Tarascan Plateau has always been home to many indigenous groups. The Purépecha people, for example, lived here for a very long time. They were skilled at farming and using the forests.
This area was the heart of the Purépecha culture during a time in Mesoamerica called the Postclassical period. Some important towns from that ancient time, which are still populated today, include Pátzcuaro and Tzintzuntzan.
