Puttstown is a small, quiet community in Pennsylvania, United States. It's not a city or a town with its own government. Instead, it's an "unincorporated community." This means it's part of a larger area called Hopewell Township. You can find Puttstown in the southwestern part of Huntingdon County, close to the border of Bedford County. It's located along Pennsylvania Route 913, just east of a place called Saxton.

A Look Back: Puttstown's History

Puttstown started way back in 1840. That's when a man named Henry Putt decided to build his home here. He also built something very important: a grist mill. A grist mill is a place where grain, like wheat or corn, is ground into flour. Henry Putt's mill was right next to a stream called Shoups Run.

The First Mill

The very first mill was made of logs. It had one set of grinding stones. These stones came from a nearby place called Broad Top Mountain. The mill used the power of water from Shoup's Run to turn its grinding stones. This was a common way to power machines before electricity.

A Bigger Mill

In 1853, Henry's son, Levi Putt, took down the old log mill. He built a new, bigger mill in its place. This new mill was made of wood frames. It had three sets of grinding stones, which meant it could grind more grain faster.

Puttstown Grows

By 1880, Puttstown had grown quite a bit. Besides the grist mill, there was also a tannery. A tannery is a place where animal hides are turned into leather. The community also had about 30 homes. This shows how important the mill and tannery were to the people living there.
