The Pyrenean desman or Iberian desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is a small mammal that lives near water. It is related to moles and shrews. This animal is one of only two types of desmans left in the world. The other is the Russian desman.

Pyrenean desmans live in parts of Spain, Portugal, the French Pyrenees, and Andorra. However, their numbers have been going down in many areas. This means they are a globally threatened species.

What Does a Pyrenean Desman Look Like?

A Pyrenean desman is about 11 to 14 centimeters (4 to 5.5 inches) long. Its tail is rounded and covered in scales, measuring 12 to 16 centimeters (4.7 to 6.3 inches). These animals weigh between 35 and 80 grams (1.2 to 2.8 ounces).

They have a long, sensitive nose that looks like a small trunk. This nose has special hairs called vibrissae. It also has tiny organs that help them find food. Their large feet are webbed, like a duck's, and have fringed hairs. This helps them swim very well. They can also close their nostrils and ears to keep water out.

The desman's body is covered in dark, brownish fur. Its tail and nose are not furry. The nose is black and has those special facial hairs (vibrissae). They use these hairs to feel for prey moving in mud or small cracks.

Life and Habits

Pyrenean desmans are mostly active at night. This means they are nocturnal. They eat small invertebrates, which are tiny creatures without backbones. Most of their food comes from the water.

These animals can live for at least 3.5 years. They are thought to be aggressive towards other adult desmans. Both males and females use scent to mark their territory.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Pyrenean desmans can have babies up to three times a year. The mother carries the babies for about 30 days. Each time, three or four young desmans are born. Male desmans usually have a slightly larger territory than females.

Where Do Pyrenean Desmans Live?

Pyrenean desmans are excellent swimmers. They are perfectly suited for living in water. Their claws also help them climb well. They mostly live in fast-flowing rivers in mountains. These rivers usually have shallow water and good plant life along the banks.

Sadly, the places where Pyrenean desmans live are in danger. Recent studies show that their numbers have dropped a lot in many areas.

Why Are They in Danger?

Several things threaten the Pyrenean desman. Their habitat is being broken up and changed. This makes it harder for them to find food and safe places to live. Invasive species are also a problem. For example, the American mink is an animal that does not naturally belong in their habitat. It can harm the desmans. Climate change also affects their environment.

The Photo Ark Project

On May 4, 2018, National Geographic announced something special. The Pyrenean desman was the 8,000th animal photographed for The Photo Ark. This project aims to photograph every species in the world. It was created by Joel Sartore.
