Péter Rusorán (born April 11, 1940, died February 14, 2012) was a famous Hungarian athlete. He was a talented swimmer and an amazing water polo player. Later, he became a very successful water polo coach. As a player, he won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in 1964. He also earned a bronze medal in 1960. In 1965, he won a big student sports event called the Universiade. As a coach, Péter Rusorán helped his teams win many national championships. He also led them to victory twice in a major European competition, the European Champions Cup.

Playing Career Highlights

Péter Rusorán was born in Budapest, the capital city of Hungary. He started swimming and playing water polo when he was nine years old. He played for different clubs during his career. In 1971, he helped his club team win the Hungarian Cup, which was a big achievement for him as a player.

Playing for Hungary

Péter Rusorán played for the Hungarian national water polo team many times. He played 103 matches between 1959 and 1968.

Olympic Medals

  • In 1960, he won a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Rome. He played two games and scored six goals.
  • Four years later, in 1964, he was part of the Hungarian team that won the gold medal at the Olympics in Tokyo. He scored eight goals in six matches. He was the top Hungarian scorer in that championship!
  • In 1965, he also won the Universiade (a sports event for university students) when it was held in his hometown of Budapest.

Coaching Successes

After he stopped playing water polo professionally in 1972, Péter Rusorán became a coach. He was just as successful as a coach as he was a player!

Leading Vasas SC

He became the head coach for Vasas SC, a famous water polo club. He led them to win seven Hungarian Championship titles. This means they were the best team in Hungary many times!

European Triumphs

On the European level, his team won the European Champions Cup twice. They won this important competition in 1980 and again in 1985. He also led Vasas SC to win the Cup Winners' Cup in 1986.

Coaching National Teams and Abroad

Péter Rusorán also coached the Hungarian national team from 1983 to 1985. During this time, Hungary won a silver medal at the 1983 World Championship. He even coached the Iranian national team for a short time. Later, he coached teams in other countries, including Germany, Greece, and Switzerland.

Life After Water Polo

After he stopped coaching, Péter Rusorán moved to Paloznak. This is a small village in the Bakony mountains in Hungary. In 2010, the village made him an honorary citizen. This was to thank him for his amazing sports achievements and for his contributions to the community. He passed away on February 14, 2012, at the age of 71.
