Qi (Chinese: ) was a small kingdom in ancient China. It existed during a time called the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. This was a period when China was divided into many different states. Qi was ruled by only one person, a powerful leader named Li Maozhen.

What Was the Kingdom of Qi?

The Kingdom of Qi was a state in China. It was around from 907 to 924 CE. This time was known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. During this period, China did not have one strong ruler. Instead, many smaller kingdoms fought for control.

At its largest, Qi covered parts of what are now Gansu, Shaanxi, and Sichuan provinces. Its capital city was Fengxiang. This city is located in modern-day Shaanxi province. Over time, the kingdom became much smaller. It ended up being just the area around its capital.

Who Was Li Maozhen?

Li Maozhen was the only ruler of Qi. He was known as the Prince of Qi. He first gained power in 901 CE. He officially established the kingdom in 907 CE. Li Maozhen was a strong military leader. He controlled the region for many years.

How Did Qi End?

The Kingdom of Qi did not last very long. In 924 CE, Li Maozhen decided to give up his independence. He submitted to a new, larger dynasty called the Later Tang. This meant that Qi was no longer its own kingdom.

After Li Maozhen passed away in 924, his son, Li Congyan, took over. He continued to govern the Fengxiang area. However, in 926, the Later Tang emperor, Li Cunxu, removed him from power. Li Congyan did serve as governor of Fengxiang a few more times later on.
