1.The preceding entity of the Later Tang was the State of Jin, which was established by Li Keyong in 895 under the Tang dynasty and existed as an independent state in 907–923.
2.With the support of the Liao dynasty.

The Later Tang was an important imperial dynasty in Chinese history. It was one of the Five Dynasties that ruled parts of China. This period lasted from 907 to 960 AD.

The Later Tang dynasty officially began in 923 AD. It ended in 937 AD. Its rulers were from a group called the Shatuo people. They were not originally Chinese. The dynasty used the name "Tang" to show they were trying to bring back the glory of the earlier, famous Tang dynasty.

Before 923 AD, the Later Tang existed as a state known as the Former Jin. This state was founded in 907 AD. At its strongest, the Later Tang controlled most of northern China.

Who Were the Later Tang Emperors?

The Later Tang dynasty had four emperors. They were all from the Shatuo people. Their reigns were relatively short.

  • Li Cunxu (Zhuangzong) ruled from 923 to 926 AD. He was the first emperor.
  • Li Siyuan (Mingzong) ruled from 926 to 933 AD.
  • Li Conghou (Min) ruled from 933 to 934 AD.
  • Li Congke (Modi) ruled from 934 to 937 AD. He was the last emperor.

How Did the Later Tang Dynasty Start?

The Later Tang dynasty grew out of the Jin state. This state was founded by Li Keyong. He was a powerful military leader. His son, Li Cunxu, built on his father's power.

Li Cunxu defeated the Later Liang dynasty in 923 AD. The Later Liang was the first of the Five Dynasties. After his victory, Li Cunxu declared himself emperor. He named his new dynasty "Tang." This marked the official start of the Later Tang.

Where Was the Later Tang Capital?

The capital city of the Later Tang changed. When the dynasty first started in 923 AD, its capital was Daming. Soon after, the capital moved to Luoyang. Luoyang was an important city in Chinese history. It served as the capital for most of the Later Tang's existence, from 923 to 936 AD.

How Did the Later Tang Dynasty End?

The Later Tang dynasty faced many challenges. There were often conflicts among its leaders. In 936 AD, a general named Shi Jingtang rebelled. He was supported by the Khitan people. The Khitan were a powerful group from the north.

Shi Jingtang's rebellion was successful. He overthrew the last Later Tang emperor, Li Congke. This happened on January 11, 937 AD. Shi Jingtang then established his own dynasty, the Later Jin. This marked the end of the Later Tang dynasty.
