Quantico is a small, quiet community located in Wicomico County, Maryland, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county. It's also a census-designated place, meaning the U.S. Census Bureau defines it for gathering population data. Quantico is situated along Quantico Creek and was once part of an old travel route. It's home to about 35 houses, two churches, a general store, and a post office. It's also considered part of the larger Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware area.

What Does Quantico Mean?

The name "Quantico" comes from Native American languages. It means "place of dancing." This gives us a hint about the history of the area.

Quantico's Oldest Home

The oldest house in Quantico is at 6508 Quantico Road. It was built in 1790. An addition was added in 1810. You can tell the age of different parts of the house by looking at the nails used. The house was built with brick. It was later covered in stucco to look like fancy stone.

Originally, this house did not face the street. It was built to face Quantico Creek. The creek was once part of the property. In 1798, the house and its land were sold. Henry Crawford, a tanner, bought it in January. He named the property Chelsea. Old records show the house had many buildings. These included a log cookhouse, a stable, and a meathouse. There were also buildings for his business, like a tannery, a shed, a barkhouse, and a millhouse.

St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church is an important building in Quantico. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This means it is recognized as a place important to the history of the United States.
