A Look Back: History of Quebrada Grande

After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special kind of area connected to the U.S., known as an unincorporated territory.

In 1899, the United States government counted everyone living in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 931 people lived in the Quebrada Grande neighborhood at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Quebrada Grande has grown.

Quebrada Grande as a Special Community

Since 2001, Puerto Rico has had a special law to help communities that face challenges. This law helps identify places with high levels of poverty or where people might not have enough resources. These places are called Comunidades especiales de Puerto Rico, which means "Special Communities of Puerto Rico."

In 2004, Quebrada Grande was added to this list of special communities. Being on this list means the community can get extra help and support. The goal is to improve the lives of people living in these areas. The program aims to provide more opportunities and resources for residents.
