Quebradas is a barrio (which is like a neighborhood or district) located in the town of Yauco, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 883 people lived there.
What's in a Name?
The word quebrada comes from Spanish and it means "ravine". A ravine is like a deep, narrow valley, often formed by flowing water.
A Glimpse into the Past
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a census (which is an official count of the population) of Puerto Rico. This count showed that the population of Quebradas barrio was 1,009 people at that time. By 2010, the population had changed to 883 people.
