Quebradillas barrio-pueblo is a special part of Quebradillas, a town in Puerto Rico. It is like the main downtown area or "seat" of the town. In 2010, about 3,103 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain long ago, each town has a special area called a pueblo. This pueblo usually has a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, people celebrate Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) in this main square.
The Main Square and Its Church
The central plaza, or main square, is a very important place. People use it for fun events and to meet friends and family. It's a place where people can gather and socialize from morning until night.
Long ago, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies guided how towns in Puerto Rico were built. These laws said that the main square should be big enough for celebrations. They also said that the streets nearby should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain.
Right across from the main square in Quebradillas barrio-pueblo is the Parroquia San Rafael Arcángel. This is a Roman Catholic church that opened in 1950. The very first church on this spot was made of wood and finished in 1823. A second church, built from stone in 1828, was badly damaged by an earthquake in 1918. It was taken down soon after.
A Look at History
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 1,166 people lived in the Quebradillas barrio at that time. The number of people living in this area has changed over the years.
